A conversation with Greg
Tell me a little about your studies at Southern New Hampshire University.
I studied Advertising with a focus on the business side. What was cool about the program at Southern New Hampshire was that we had a student-run agency called Ad Lab, where we worked with real clients. We would work with 1 non-profit and 1 for-profit company per semester.
Which clients did you like working with the most?
I really enjoyed doing work for the Manchester Monarchs, the local AHL hockey team. And Camp Allen – which is a camp for mentally and physically disabled kids in New Hampshire – was a very rewarding and unique client to work with.
What attracted you to Xpresso?
Xpresso is a growing Mascola Group company – it has a lot of potential. And what’s interesting is that here, PR is integrated into Mascola Group’s Interactive and Advertising disciplines. Not a lot of places can pull that off, so I thought that was pretty impressive.
So how do you feel PR fits in with Advertising and Interactive?
PR is evolving right now. There’s more of an emphasis on branding and strategic marketing. It’s more than just news stories and press releases. The new direction is all-encompassing and includes things like blogs and social networking, which were never a part of the industry before.
Do you think that this will make traditional PR vehicles obsolete?
Absolutely not. It all depends on who a client is trying to reach and what is appropriate for their target audience.
You’ve done a lot of internships over the past 4 years – how have they prepared you for your work at Xpresso?
I’ve done a total of four internships, and each one taught me how to work as part of a team. But two internships gave me a particularly interesting perspective. I did one internship in Raymarine’s internal marketing department, then the following winter I started interning for Mascola Advertising, which serves as Raymarine’s agency. So I gained a deeper understanding of the client-agency relationship. And I think it’s helped me to see brands a little more clearly than if I had interned at only one of those places.
What talent do you wish you had?
I wish I was a better golfer. The best I’ve ever shot is 88, and I’ve been playing since I was 12. It’s a game of constant torture, but I love it just the same.
Why?
It’s relaxing and enjoyable. And it’s rewarding because it’s an individual game – it’s all on me. Which gives me the motivation to keep improving. And I love being outdoors.
What other outdoor sports or activities do you like?
Camping. And tailgating at sporting events. I also go to about two Nascar races a year and enjoy an occasional game of wiffle ball.
What motivates you?
You know, I’ve just always had a drive to excel at what I do. Always try to make my mom proud.
