March 16, 2007 - Miami Boat Show Blues
Every year, thousands of yacht owners and owners-to-be head to The Miami International Boat Show. They are dreamers. And many of them come ready to turn their dreams into reality, checkbook in hand. So we posed a question: are boat manufacturers doing everything they can to get those checks? The answer might surprise you.
During the show this past February, three Mascola Group employees ventured out to the booths of several boat companies for a little experiment.
Posing as consumers, they each boarded two or three mid- to upscale cabin cruisers in the 28’-40’ range. They sat in driver’s seats, examined woodwork and looked around below deck. Chuck, Mascola Group’s president, even tested out one of the beds. And do you know what happened? Nothing.
No salespeople approached. No one asked if they needed any help. No smiles. No eye contact. Nada.
So we narrowed the cause of this down to two possibilities:
- They’re such seasoned salesmen, they can recognize a tire kicker when they see one.
- Pure laziness.
